AGENDA #10

MEMORANDUM

TO:                  Mayor and Town Council

FROM:            Naming Committee (Council Member Sally Greene, Mayor Pro Tem Bill Strom, Council Member Jim Ward)

SUBJECT:      Response to Petition Requesting the Old Post Office Plaza be Named in Honor of Joe and Lucy Straley and Charlotte Adams

DATE:            March 27, 2006

The Council’s Naming Committee met on Thursday, March 9 to discuss a petition from Council Member Thorpe regarding naming the Old Post Office plaza in honor of Joe and Lucy Straley and Charlotte Adams.

The Committee recommends naming the space for an ideal, such as “Freedom Plaza.” Plaques honoring Joe and Lucy Straley, Charlotte Adams, and other citizens could then be displayed in this space. The Straleys and Ms. Adams were active in civil justice issues and spent countless hours in front of the Old Post Office collecting signatures and holding demonstrations and vigils.

The Committee would like to proceed with this idea and is seeking input from the Council. In keeping with the policy, we would like to have public input, with dedication of the plaza to be made in July 2006.  The dedication could also create another community celebration that could become an annual event.
