AGENDA #6

MEMORANDUM

TO:

Roger L. Stancil, Town Manager

FROM:

Catherine Lazorko, Town Information Officer

SUBJECT:

Acceptance of Video Public Service Announcements

DATE:

January 8, 2007

The attached resolution would thank a UNC-Chapel Hill journalism class led by Professor Richard Simpson and Adjunct Professor Bruce Curran for its work and accept three video Public Service Announcements to be aired on Government Cable Channel 18 and other public access stations in our area.

BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION

In an effort to convey information about Town services and facilities to our citizens, the Town Information Officer initiated a video production project involving a class at the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Working with the departments of Transportation, Parks and Recreation, and Police, the class devoted its fall 2006 semester to the production of Public Service Announcements (PSAs) for the Town. The class is led by Professor Richard Simpson and Adjunct Professor Bruce Curran.

Although the class usually charges clients in order to recover costs for a professional videographer and sound technician, fees were waived for this first production venture. We believe the finished products are informative and stimulating. We hope to complete more PSAs in the future for broadcast on Government Cable 18 and other area broadcast outlets.

The completed PSAs contain the following messages:

  1. Take your bike for a bus ride! Are you confused about how to use the bus rack on Chapel Hill Transit? We’ll show you how.
  2. What does it mean to be a “Good Neighbor”? Students can help build community.
  3. Chapel Hill has a robust system of paved trails for use by pedestrians, joggers, rollerbladers and bicyclists. Learn how to access this wonderful resource.

These videos will be provided on the Town’s website at www.townofchapelhill.org for immediate viewing by the public.

RECOMMENDATION

That the Council adopt the following resolution that would accept the three video Public Service Announcements for future broadcast and thank the UNC journalism class for its work.
