SUMMARY OF BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN
ADVISORY BOARD ACTION

Subject:	NC 86/ Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard Corridor and Town Wide Pedestrian Safety Evaluation Draft Study
Meeting Date:	March 27, 2007

Recommendation:     The Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board is excited by the overall plan for the NC86/ Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard Corridor and wishes to see the plan implemented as soon as possible. The Board notes that current funds for implementation are limited and supports expenditure of those funds on the provision of striped bicycle lanes and the installation of pedestrian crosswalks where possible.

The Board made the following comments on the Town Wide intersection recommendations:

• All crosswalks on streets with 4 or more lanes should include a pedestrian refuge island midway in the crosswalk likely coinciding with any median
• Consider providing advanced pedestrian warning signs with warning flasher for all crosswalks on NC 54 and US 15-501

The Board made the following location specific comments on the proposed improvements:

• NC 54 and Finley Golf Course/Burning Tree Drive:  Provide a countdown for the crosswalk
• Fordham Boulevard at Manning Drive: Provide an advanced pedestrian warning sign with warning flasher on the Manning Drive leg of the intersection
• Erwin Road at Weaver Dairy Road: Reduce the radius on the south bound lane of Weaver Dairy Road, provide an advanced pedestrian warning sign with warning flasher on the northbound side of the intersection
• Fordham Boulevard at Erwin Road (“Superstreet intersection”): The Board does not believe a fence will work to direct pedestrians to safe crossing points
