AGENDA #4m

memorandum

to:

Roger L. Stancil, Town Manager

from:

Lance Norris, Interim Public Works Director

Curtis Brooks, Urban Forester

subject:

Inclusion of Joe Herzenberg’s Name on the Peace and Justice Plaza Plaque

date:

November 19, 2007

PURPOSE

Adoption of the attached resolution would authorize the Town Manager to include the name of Joe Herzenberg, recently deceased community activist and advocate for social justice, on the plaque being prepared for installation in the Peace and Justice Plaza in front of the Old Courthouse.

BACKGROUND

On September 10, 2007 the Council authorized the Town Manager to purchase and install a 5’ by 5’ granite plaque identifying the Peace and Justice Plaza in front of the Old Courthouse and honoring the contributions of Charlotte Adams, Joe Straley and Lucy Straley.  On November 7, 2007 the Council received and referred to the Manager a petition from Council Member Mark Kleinschmidt requesting that the name of Joe Herzenberg be included on this plaque.

DISCUSSION

Town staff, working with staff from the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission, is currently preparing a contract with a local monument company to purchase the engraved plaque as authorized by the Council on September 10, 2007.  The plaque was designed to accommodate the future names of individuals in addition to the three originally authorized, and for a nominal cost the purchase contract can readily be amended to include the name of Joe Herzenberg.

RECOMMENDATION

We recommend that the Council adopt the following resolution authorizing the Town Manager to include the name of Joe Herzenberg, recently deceased community activist and advocate for social justice, on the plaque being prepared for installation in the Peace and Justice Plaza in front of the Old Courthouse.
