AGENDA #4i

MEMORANDUM

TO:

Mayor and Town Council

FROM:

Naming Committee (Council Member Sally Greene, Mayor pro tem Jim Ward, Council Member Bill Strom)

SUBJECT:

Resolution Recommending Names for Placement on the Peace and Justice Plaza Marker

DATE:

May 5, 2008

The Council’s Naming Committee met on April 21, 2008 to hear suggestions from NAACP representatives as to names of deserving local African Americans to be included on the Peace and Justice Plaza marker, in its initial installation.

The Council has already recommended that the names of Joe and Lucy Straley, Charlotte Adams, and Joe Herzenberg be engraved on the marker.

After review and discussion of the Town policy, and its pros and cons, the Council Committee accepted the recommendation that the following four African Americans be honored, all of whom are deceased: Hubert Robinson, James R. Brittain, Henry “Hank” Anderson III, and Gloria Williams.

The Committee would like to recommend to the Council that the names of Joe and Lucy Straley, Charlotte Adams, Joe Herzenberg, Hubert Robinson, James R. Brittain, Henry “Hank” Anderson III, and Gloria Williams be engraved on the marker in alphabetical order. In future deliberations, the Naming Committee will come to a recommendation for the Council of a formalized set of criteria for future Peace and Justice Plaza honorees, to put in writing for future reference.

Adoption of the attached resolution would give approval to proceed with engraving the eight names, in alphabetical order, on the Peace and Justice Plaza marker.
