A RESOLUTION RECOMMENDING NAMES FOR PLACEMENT ON THE PEACE AND JUSTICE PLAZA MARKER (2008-05-05/R-7.1)

 

WHEREAS, the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill approved naming the space in front of the old Post Office the Peace and Justice Plaza and the placement of a stone marker at the site that would display the names of citizens who had given much of their lives to the causes of peace and justice in our community; and

 

WHEREAS, the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill also approved adding the names of deceased social activists Joe and Lucy Straley, Charlotte Adams and Joe Herzenberg to the Peace and Justice marker; and

 

WHEREAS, the Council Naming Committee accepted the recommendation from representatives from the NAACP that the following four deceased African Americans be honored: Hubert Robinson, James R. Brittain, Henry “Hank” Anderson III, and Gloria Williams; and recommends to the Council that they proceed with engraving all eight names on the marker in alphabetical order.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Council authorize the Town Manager to proceed with engraving the names of Joe and Lucy Straley, Charlotte Adams, Joe Herzenberg, Hubert Robinson, James R. Brittain, Henry “Hank” Anderson III and Gloria Williams on the Peace and Justice marker in alphabetical order.
