A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE TOWN MANAGER TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THE INSTALLATION OF PEDESTRIAN-LEVEL STREET LIGHTING IMPROVEMENTS AND TWO EMERGENCY CALL BOXES IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA OF CHAPEL HILL (2008-05-05/R-8)

WHEREAS, the UNC Student Body has requested the installation of pedestrian-level street lighting improvements and emergency call boxes in the downtown area of Chapel Hill to improve pedestrian safety conditions; and

WHEREAS, the UNC Student Body has provided $80,000 to fund the installation of pedestrian-level street lighting improvements and emergency call boxes; and

WHEREAS, the Town conducted a public information meeting and received comments from the area residents; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Council authorizes the Town Manager to move forward with the installation of

1. Install pedestrian-level street lighting in the following areas using up to $40,000 to be provided by the UNC Student Body:
• Northside Neighborhood
• McCauley Street
• Rosemary Street between Hillsborough Street and Boundary Street
2. Install emergency call boxes at the following general locations using up to $40,000 to be provided by the UNC Student Body:
• Mallette Street and Colony Court
• Church Street and Short Street
• A third location to be determined

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Town Manager work with the UNC Student Body to finalize the location for installation of the third call box.
