AGENDA #3a(1)

SUMMARY OF ACTIVE LIVING BY DESIGN COMMITTEE ACTION

Subject:                 In an effort to explore lower cost options to improve pedestrian safety on secondary roads without sidewalks, the Active Living by Design Advisory Committee presents this petition to implement an alternative pedestrian travel lane pilot program on Shady Lawn Road from Kenmore to Eastwood (or an alternative road with adequate width).

Meeting Date:           February 7, 2008

ALbD Committee Recommendation:

Active Living by Design Advisory Committee recommends the implementation of a pilot project on Shady Lawn that includes restricting parking to one side of the street and adding striping along the opposite side, or a similar solution recommended by town traffic engineers.

Due to the high cost of installing a traditional sidewalk in established neighborhoods, this pilot program is intended to assess the feasibility of alternative solutions to increase pedestrian safety and confidence on secondary roads that are well traveled, have no sidewalks,  and have limited sight distances due to the topography.

This recommendation supports an alternative pedestrian travel lane pilot program developed by the Town Traffic Engineering Department.
