A RESOLUTION REGARDING ESTABLISHING WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS (2005-06-27/R-0.1)

WHEREAS, the Chapel Hill Downtown Economic Development Corporation has petitioned the Town Council to pursue wireless internet access for the downtown; and

WHEREAS, four members of the Town’s Technology Committee have petitioned the Town Council to authorize the Technology Committee to work with the Downtown Economic Development Corporation and any other Town or University group that may be involved in planning and implementing a downtown or citywide wireless initiative; and

WHEREAS, the Council previously received a petition from Mayor pro tem Wiggins and Council Member Greene regarding creation of a wireless Internet access environment in the Northside and Pine Knolls neighborhoods and referred said petition to the Manager and the Technology Committee for a follow-up report and options for consideration by the Council;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the petition from the Chapel Hill Downtown Economic Development Commission and the petition from the four members of the Technology Committee are referred to the Manager, the Attorney, and the Technology Committee with a request for reports and options for consideration by the Council regarding establishment of a wireless internet environment in the downtown and in neighborhoods adjacent to the downtown such as the Northside and Pine Knolls neighborhoods.
