Summer Reading Program 2004

Registration:
You register for the program at the Children's Desk of the library between June 14 and July 30, 2004. When you register, you will receive a Reading Record.  You will also set your personal reading goal for the summer.  Remember to keep your Reading Record in a safe place.  You will use it to keep track of all the books you read over the course of the summer.

Books:
Choose books that you enjoy reading and that are on your reading level. You can read books on any subject, fiction or non-fiction. The titles should be books that can be found at the Chapel Hill Public Library. Pre-readers may register and receive credit for books that are read to them. Older children may also receive credit for the books the read to younger children.

Stamps:
As you read books, write the titles in your Reading Record. Then, bring your Reading Record to the Children's Desk at the Library.  You will receive stamps in your Reading Record for the books you have read.

Rewards (Weekly Prizes):
You will receive a different prize each week that you come in to have your Reading Record stamped (between June 14 and August 8).  Prizes are not based on amount of reading completed.
  • Registration/Week 1 (June 14-20): plastic book bag
  • Week 2 (June 21-27): bookmark
  • Week 3 (June 28-July 3): pencil
  • Week 4 (July 5-11): stickers
  • Week 5 (July 12-18): button
  • Week 6 (July 19-25): door hanger
  • Week 7 (July 26-August 1): notepad
  • Week 8 (August 2-8): magnetic photo frame
If you miss a week due to vacation, just let us know the next time you come in for stamps. We will give you the prize you missed (while supplies last).

Certificates:
When you reach your personal Reading Goal for the summer, you will also receive a Certificate for finishing the Summer Reading Program, and a paperback book or other prize from the Prize Cart.

The Battle of the Books is a reading club for children in upper elementary and middle school grades that encourages reading throughout the summer. All participants in the program will read great books written in a variety of literary styles. In addition to being fun, the program will improve reading skills and expand your choices of reading materials.

We offer two clubs: one for ages 7 to 9 (must have completed 2nd grade) and another for ages 10 to 13 (must have completed 4th grade). There will be one list for ages 7 to 9 and a different list for ages 10 to 13; all participants will read from the same list of books. Because different children read at different levels, each list includes books with a range of reading levels.

Starting June 17, we meet every other Thursday from 3:00-3:45 p.m. We will share what we learned from and liked about each of the books with the rest of the group. At the end of July, kids will be broken into smaller groups to prepare for the End-of-Summer Event -- a trivia contest and pizza party! This final event will be held Saturday, August 7 (10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.). Children and their parents are invited.

Registration for the summer Battle of the Books will take place between May 24 and June 17, 2004. Due to space limitations, and in order to make the program successful, registration will be limited to 35 participants per age bracket.
