The Chapel Hill Parks & Recreation Department, co-sponsored with the Carrboro Recreation & Parks Department and the Orange County Parks & Recreation Department will present a spring celebration for children ages 2-10 years on Saturday, April 4 from 9:30 to 12:00 noon,

The new location, hosted by Orange County Recreation & Parks will be the New Hope Park Facility at the former Blackwood Farm location near the intersection of NC Highway 86 and New Hope Church Road and east of Interstate 40.

FREE activities include an EGG HUNT for THREE AGE GROUPS, LIVE CHILDREN’S ENTERTAINMENT, GAMES and PRIZES. EGG HUNT BEGINS AT 10:30 a.m. SHARP! For more information call us at 919-968-2784.

Health on the Block

Health on the Block is an annual free event held by NC Health Careers Access Program Ambassadors. The purpose of Health on the Block is to offer free healthcare to the community. Vendors from the UNC School of Dentistry, the Public Health Department, and the UNC School of Medicine will offer free dental screenings, free blood pressure checks, information on blood donation, platelet donation, and proper breast cancer check techniques. Our 2nd Annual Earth Action Day Celebration, presented on location at the University of North Carolina’s Morehead Planetarium and Science Center.

A free event for the whole family, Earth Action Day will provide a fun-filled afternoon of learning more about our planet and the human relationship with the environment through demonstrations, performances, and activities by and for all ages.

Dixie Rock 20 Competition
Friday-Saturday, April 24-25, 2009

Join us for our annual indoor climbing wall competition at our newly renovated community center!  This event is the longest running climbing competition known in the nation.  We welcome climbers to begin preliminaries on Friday night starting at 6:00 p.m.  Action resumes on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and heats up for the finals at 7:00 p.m.   This competition is geared toward all climbing skill levels, including several youth categories.  For additional information and application packets call us at 919-968-2784.

A Nine Week Entertainment Series
Every Thursday - June 18 thru August 20

The Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership and the Town of Chapel Hill present the Locally Grown Rooftop Music and Movies Series every Thursday this summer in Downtown Chapel Hill. Locally Grown is a nine week series of Live Concerts and Outdoor Movies featuring local entertainers and family friendly activities in Downtown Chapel Hill.

Presented every Thursday on the Wallace Plaza, an urban park atop the Wallace Parking Deck at 150 East Rosemary Street, our mission is to promote the downtown community by encouraging people and families to come downtown and shop, eat and be local patrons for businesses throughout the downtown district.

July Fourth Celebration
Kenan Memorial Stadium on the UNC campus

Each year the Chapel Hill Parks & Recreation Department in cooperation with UNC and the Town of Carrboro, hosts a patriotic July Fourth Fireworks Display at UNC’s Kenan Stadium on July 4th. Featuring a live concert and gate attractions face painting, magic and juggling, this is surely an event geared towards family fun and a community celebration. The Fireworks shoot at 9:30pm sharp, and are view from inside the stadium only. So it’s always a good idea to get to the stadium early to get your self parked and inside the stadium in time for the live entertainment at 8pm. The concession stands are always open, as no coolers or other food and drink are allowed inside the stadium.

The Town of Chapel Hill Parks & Recreation Department is proud to sponsor our Annual Festifall Arts and Crafts Street Fair in downtown Chapel Hill, Sunday, October 4, 2009 from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. Quality arts and crafts by some of the most talented artists in NC will be shown at this event. Bring your holiday shopping list and some home décor ideas for purchasing original art. Everything from live music and original arts and crafts to the ultimate Kids Zone will be displayed at this premier fall spectacular.

The sights, sounds and brisk fall air will be accented by thousands of fair goers. The Annual Festifall Street Fair is a beautiful fall event with a home-town, community touch, designed with family, friends and newcomers in mind.

We invite arts & craft exhibitors and entertainers to apply by the July 17, 2009 deadline. Limited space is available.

Homegrown Halloween

Town Manager Roger L. Stancil has announced that the Town of Chapel Hill is introducing "Homegrown Halloween in Chapel Hill," a 2008 campaign to return Halloween on Franklin Street to its roots as a small town community gathering and reduce crowd sizes that have become unmanageable.

Chapel Hill to Celebrate Arbor Day
Friday, November 20

To celebrate Arbor Day, the Town of Chapel Hill will hold a tree-planting ceremony. Time and location To Be Announced. During the ceremony, Students from Local Schools will also will participate in the Arbor Day celebration and tree planting. Chapel Hill has received national recognition as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. 2007 was the fourth time in 9 years that the Town achieved additional recognition for its urban forestry program and was honored with a Growth Award as a supplement to the Tree City USA certification.
