Therapeutic Recreation is getting a name change to remind the community that we provide both specialized programming for individuals who have disabilities AND support for both children and adults who may need some assistance to best be included in recreation programs.
Opportunities through Disability Services and Supports are continually being added. Please check back to our site frequently to view additional activities, community events and resources. Prefer to get an email reminder? Send me an email Marian Kaslovsky and I’ll add you to my email notification list.
Please be sure to consider all classes offered by Parks & Recreation as inclusion assistance can be provided. Inclusion might mean something different for every person. We think of inclusion as supporting people with disabilities to be included in parks and recreation programming to the best of their ability. These are some of the ways we support individuals as they are included in Chapel Hill Parks & Recreation programs:
Some children and teens can benefit from both specialized programs and from being included with typical peers. Please contact me if you’d like to brainstorm activities that may be appropriate for you or for an individual in your care. I’d be glad to discuss how you or your child can get the most from our programs.
Every effort will be made to accommodate each individual with the help of parents, guardians, caretakers and inclusion companions. If a person’s conduct poses physical harm or risk to self or others we may ask to meet with family or other caretakers to develop and implement strategies to help with success. After a reasonable amount of time and effort has been made, the individual may be asked to forego Parks and Recreation programs and activities until alternate behaviors are learned.
