Celebration 2000 at Rogers Road

As of May 2003

In 1998, Orange County Habitat for Humanity asked the Chapel Hill Town Council to support an initiative to build eleven homes affordable to local residents.  In response, the Council authorized the use of $200,000 of Community Development funds for this project: $160,000 was used for acquisition of property for the development; and $40,000 was used for site development costs.  The homes were developed for citizens who had lived or worked in Orange County for the last year and who had incomes less than 50% of Area Median Income.

The project, entitled Celebration 2000, was intended to bring the community together to garner support for and create much needed affordable housing in the Chapel Hill / Carrboro areas.

Celebration 2000

“Habitat for Humanity has planned a meaningful way to celebrate the beginning of a new millennium.  We will build a new eleven home subdivision on Rogers Road in Chapel Hill.  This initiative will provide a stimulus for community involvement to create affordable housing; educate and increase awareness about poverty housing and its causes; offer “a hand-up” to eleven working Orange County families; and bring all members of Orange County together to build community and new relationships for the future.”

-Orange Co. Habitat for Humanity

On March 25, 2000 the homes were complete and a celebration was held in honor of the eleven new homeowners and the homes the community worked together to build.
