Sykes Street Neighborhood and the Sykes Street Steering Committee

In January, 2001, the Town Council of Chapel Hill adopted a resolution authorizing the Town to provide technical assistance and staff support to develop an Action Strategy for the Sykes Street area of Northside.  Residents of the Sykes Street area, EmPOWERment, Inc., Orange Community Housing and Land Trust, students from the University of North Carolina Department of City and Regional Planning, and the Town (including representatives from the Planning, Parks and Recreation, and Police Departments) met and have continued to meet to discuss issues facing the neighborhood.  This committee has become known at the Sykes Street Steering Committee (SSSC).

Northside Neighborhood Conservation District

In response to requests from the community the Town Council is considering designating the Northside Neighborhood a Neighborhood Conservation District.  The Northside Neighborhood Conservation District Advisory Committee has been meeting regularly to establish guidelines for the Neighborhood Conservation District that will be recommended to the Council for approval.
