Orange County Literacy Council

As of December 2002

In January 1999, the Orange County Literacy Council kicked off the first Pilot Computer Literacy Lab at the South Estes Community Center funded by Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds.  The Computer Literacy Lab provides residents of public housing access to and personal training on computers allowing them to enhance a number of skills.

For some residents, this program is their first experience with a computer.  For others, they are learning more advanced skills such as the use of PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher, and the Internet.  Programs such as the “New Reader Bookstore”, which helps residents improve their reading skills, has increased self-confidence among residents and has positively effected their ability to help their children with homework.  The pre-GED and GED software is helping residents attain their GED.

The Computer Literacy Labs were originally provided in the South Estes and Trinity Court/Pritchard Park public housing communities and has been expanded to the Hargraves Community Center.  Recent acquisitions include three laptops, which are checked out by tutors and used at job sites when residents are not able to attend the labs.  For more information or to volunteer, click here: Orange County Literacy Council.
