YMCA After School Program

As of December 2002

For the past seven years, Community Development has been funding after school programs for children ages 5 -12 from disadvantaged communities.  The current program, which is organized by the YMCA, includes tutoring, recreational, and character building activities.

Funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Community Development Block Grant, the program has provided numerous scholarships.  The students work on their homework each day and are privately tutored by students from UNC’s Campus HYPE program.  The children learn the importance of teamwork playing soccer and often have the opportunity to go swimming.  The Service League has sponsored a monthly birthday party and the Rotary Club of Chapel Hill has planned annual excursions to the Nutcracker ballet in Durham.
