Eve Carson Investigation UPDATE

(Lawrence Alvin Lovett Jr. Arrested in Durham) 

Early this morning at approximately 4:15 am, the Durham Police Department located Lawrence Alvin Lovett Jr. (17) at a residence in Durham.  Lovett surrendered to police without incident and is currently being held at the Durham Police Department.  The arrest warrants for First Degree Murder were transferred over to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations for service. Our current understanding is that Lovett will not be transferred over to the Chapel Hill Police Department. 

Currently there is no press conference scheduled for today

 UPDATE – ARREST MADE IN EVE CARSON INVESTIGATION  

Early this morning the Chapel Hill Police Department received information that the individual appearing in the convenience store photograph was possibly in a residence in Durham.  Chapel Hill Police Investigators then notified the Durham Police authorities and surveillance of this location was established.  At approximately 5:00am, Demario James Atwater (21) was taken into police custody after he was observed exiting the residence.  Warrants have been served on Atwater charging him with 1st Degree Murder in the death of Eve Carson.

The Chapel Hill Police Department has also obtained warrants for Lawrence Alvin Lovett Jr. (17), who we believe to be the driver pictured in the first ATM photograph.  Lovett has also been charged with 1st Degree Murder in the death of Eve Carson.  Lovett remains at large and we need your help in locating this individual.   Lovett is described as B/M, height 507, weight 150.  We have included the most recent photograph of Lovett in our press release and anyone with information concerning his whereabouts is urged to call 911 or Crime Stoppers at (919) 942-7515.  Lawrence Alvin Lovett Jr. should be considered armed and dangerous.  

The Chapel Hill Police Department would like to thank all those who called in with information concerning this investigation.  We have received hundreds of tips since we began this investigation.  We would also like to express our appreciation to those agencies that have offered their support in this investigation.  UNC Department of Public Safety, Durham Police Department, NC State Bureau of Investigation, Federal Bureau of Investigation, UNC Hospital Police, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and all other agencies that have reached out to us and offered their support.

UPDATE – EVE CARSON INVESTIGATION 

We have just received additional surveillance photos of a person of interest in the murder of Eve Carson.  These photographs were taken in an area convenience store and we are asking for any assistance the public can provide in determining the subject’s identification. 

I’d like to remind you all of the generous pledge from the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees.  They are pledging $25,000 to the Carrboro-Chapel Hill-UNC Crime Stoppers program for a reward for information leading to the arrest of a person or persons responsible for the murder of Eve Carson.  We ask that citizens with information about the case call Crime Stoppers at 919-942-7515 or www.crimestoppers.chcunc.org.  All conversations are confidential and callers do not need to reveal their identity.

UPDATE – EVE CARSON INVESTIGATION CONTINUES 

On Saturday, March 8th the Chapel Hill Police Department released surveillance photos of an individual attempting to use the victim’s ATM card at an area location.  We received a number of tips from citizens over the weekend and investigators are continuing to follow up on those reports. 

Questions have surfaced about an individual possibly seated in the rear passenger seat of the vehicle.  We do believe there is a second unidentified male seated in the rear seat.  We have been exploring ways to enhance the quality of this photo in an effort to learn more about this person.

UPDATE – EVE CARSON INVESTIGATION 

We have received and have been reviewing surveillance photos of a person of interest in the murder of Eve Carson.  We began circulating these photos among local, state and federal law enforcement agencies just before lunchtime yesterday in an effort to develop more information about the identity of this person.  We are asking for any assistance the public can provide in making this identification.

Homicide Investigation Press Conference Scheduled for 11:00a.m. 

A press conference has been scheduled for today at 11:00a.m. at the Chapel Hill Police Department headquarters building to announce new information in the investigation of Eve Carson’s murder.

UPDATE – EVE CARSON INVESTIGATION 

We received word today that the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees is pledging $25,000 to the Carrboro-Chapel Hill-UNC Crime Stoppers program for a reward for information leading to the arrest of a person or persons responsible for the murder of Eve Carson. Carson was a student member of the Board of Trustees. 

Authorities are asking citizens with information about the case to call Crime Stoppers at 919-942-7515. All conversations are confidential; callers do not need to reveal their identity. 

Today we have included photographs of Eve Carson’s vehicle and we continue to be interested in speaking with anyone who may have seen this vehicle between the hours of 1:30 am Wednesday and midday yesterday.  Again the description of the vehicle is as follows: A blue 2005 Toyota Highlander with Georgia plate AIV-6690.

 

Press conferences have been suspended pending further developments.  Should additional information be made available, a press release will be issued.

UPDATE – EVE CARSON VEHICLE LOCATED  

This morning the police department issued an alert for the victim’s vehicle that was believed to have been taken during the commission of this crime.  At approximately 2:00 pm the police department received a call from a resident on North Street stating they had spotted the vehicle.  Officers responded and located the vehicle parked on North Street near Hillsborough Street.  The vehicle is currently being processed for evidence that hopefully will provide further information into the murder of Eve Carson. 

The Chapel Hill Police Department would like to thank those who have called in to provide information and we continue to urge anyone with information about this crime to call the Chapel Hill Police Department at 968-2760 or Crime Stoppers at (919) 942-7515. 

We would particularly be interested in talking with anyone who may have seen this vehicle between the hours of 1:30 am yesterday and midday today.  The description of the vehicle is as follows: A blue 2005 Toyota Highlander with Georgia plate AIV-6690. 

We would also like to thank the officials with the university and the Department of Public Safety for their continued assistance as we move forward with this investigation. 

We will resume scheduled releases tomorrow at 12:30 pm when additional information is made available.

Shooting Victim Identified 

Yesterday morning at approximately 5:00 am, Chapel Hill Police responded to reported gunshots in the area of Davie Circle.  Officers checked the area and located an unidentified female 18-25 years of age lying in the intersection of Hillcrest Drive and Hillcrest Circle. 

This morning at approximately 9:00 am a positive identification of the victim was made by police investigators and the office of the medical examiner.  The victim has been identified as Eve Carson age 22, a UNC senior and current UNC student body president.  Eve was a resident of Chapel Hill and a highly regarded member of the university community.  Our condolences go out to the Carson family and the entire university community that knew Eve. 

The police department has issued a BOLO for the victim’s vehicle that is believed to have been taken during the crime.  The description of the vehicle is as follows: A blue 2005 Toyota Highlander with Georgia plate AIV-6690.   

This investigation is on-going and the Police Department are seeking leads and continuing to urge anyone with information about this crime to call the Chapel Hill Police Department at 968-2760 or Crime Stoppers at (919) 942-7515. 

We will have another update scheduled for 5:30 to discuss any new developments.

Shooting Victim Found by Police 

This morning at approximately 5:00 am, Chapel Hill Police responded to reported gunshots in the area of Davie Circle.  Officers checked the area and located an unidentified female 18-25 years of age lying in the intersection of Hillcrest Drive and Hillcrest Circle deceased.  Further investigation is ongoing at this time. 

UPDATE – The Chapel Hill Police Department is requesting assistance in identifying the victim.  She is described as a W/F 18-25, blond hair, height 505-506, weight 120, wearing a navy blue short sleeve shirt with a red circle and a white symbol in the center, a gold in color necklace with locket, gray sweat pants and blue, gray and white converse tennis shoes that are described as Starbury in type.
