A RESOLUTION HONORING DOROTHY VERKERK

FOR SERVICE TO THE TOWN OF CHAPEL HILL

 

WHEREAS, Dorothy Verkerk served the Town of Chapel Hill as a Town Council member from December 3, 2001, to December 5, 2005; and

 

WHEREAS, Council Member Verkerk has encouraged the Town to take a leadership role in increasing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions through development of solar projects, energy efficient projects and renewable energy innovations at Town facilities; and

 

WHEREAS, Council Member Verkerk has been a regular rider on Chapel Hill Transit since 1994 and has supported the care and maintenance of the fare-free system so that more residents will leave their cars at home; and

 

WHEREAS, Council Member Verkerk has diligently encouraged the Council and staff to find ways to help citizens become a part of their Town government; and  

 

WHEREAS, Council Member Verkerk worked tirelessly for the successful passage of the 2003 bond campaign which will provide monies for sidewalks, greenways, open space, the Chapel Hill Library and the Energy Bank; and

 

WHEREAS, Council Member Verkerk served the community and the Town Council with her active participation on the following committees and work groups, as well as in many other ways:

Chapel Hill Active Living by Design Partnership Advisory Board

Parking Lots 2 and 5 Committee

Elections Financing Committee

Sustainability, Energy and Environment Committee

Montessori School Committee

WHEREAS, Council Member Verkerk’s good sense of humor, compassion for others, and generosity will be missed by Council members, employees, and citizens; and

 

WHEREAS, Council Member Verkerk has decided to leave her seat on the Town Council in order to devote more time to her special interests;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Council hereby honors and praises

 

DOROTHY VERKERK

 

for her outstanding service to the people of Chapel Hill and Orange County and her loving dedication to the betterment of the Town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
