Subject: regarding portable stop signs during power outages
To the Mayor and Town Council,
Petition to the Council:
When trafic lights are out due to power failure that the Chapel Hill Police Department have portable stop signs available to set up in the intersection for the purpose of reminding and enforcing the rule of an intersection being treated as a four way stop sign.
What prompted this suggestion was on the morning of december 15th the power went out in the Glen Lennox area. The traffic lights at the intersection of Raleigh Road and Hamilton Road were out and the traffic on Raleigh Road heading west towards UNC was moderately heavy and not slowing down at all for the intersection, which made for a confusing and dangerous situation. I called 911 and the dispatcher said he had already received a call on the matter. Over an hour later there was still no response.
The recommendation is that when an intersection's lights are out that portable stop signs be placed in the intersection for driver and pedestrian safety.
Sincerely,
Stephen Hoff
