Subject: kehillah parking lot.
Ladies and Gentlemen:
As a member of the Chapel Hill Kehillah and a resident of Chapel Hill, I wish to protest the Town Administrator's requirement that the Kehillah spend $5000 for a bus stop and $60,000 for a sidewalk adjoining our property, in order to grant our request for permission to set aside space for UNC parking. We are a young Congregation, struggling to make ends meet, and this requirement would be a serious financial burden on us.
Regarding the bus stop, there is no bus line on Mason Farms Road, and UNC has provided no bus stops along that route. Further, there is a complete line of sidewalks on the other side of Mason Farms Road, and none on our side. Providing a sidewalk adjacent to our property would not connect to any other sidewalk along the long stretch of Mason Farms Road, and would truly be a "sidewalk to nowhere". We have offered to provide a crosswalk from our property to the sidewalks on the other side of Mason Farms, and we hope that you will find this to be a satisfactory response.
Thank you for your consideration of this very important matter to our Congregation.
Respectfully, Marvin and Doris Schnall

Dear Mr. Spector:
Thank you for letting me know of your interest in this matter. I believe that your questions are addressed in the agenda material submitted for consideration by the Town Council. In the staff analysis we are applying what we believe to be the relevant law, as we do to all applications. The Council, of course, is the final decision maker. Please see the following site:
If you have trouble connecting you also may find the material by going to the Town website www.townofchapelhill.org and clicking on government, then Council agenda, then archived agenda, then January 18, then agenda item 1.
If you have questions after reviewing the material, please call me (968-2744) or Planning Director J.B. Culpepper (968-2728). We will do our best to be of assistance.
Sincerely,
Cal Horton

Subject: Kehillah parking
To Whom It May Concern:
I am a resident of Chapel Hill and member of the Chapel Hill Kehillah on Mason Farm Road. I understand that the Kehillah asked for a permit to charge for parking during the weekdays. I may be missing something in the translation but was recently told that the request would require building a sidewalk on the Kehillah side of Mason Farm Road, where there are no existing sidewalks on either side of the Kehillah.
I am not quite sure how that would improve safety. In fact, I park in the Kehillah lot when I attend Kehillah and often walk to various parts of campus. No one seems overly concerned about the safety of the Kehillah members who currently park there and often walk to the hospital or points beyond. Please explain the logic of the town's request. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Neil Spector

Subject: Unneccessary constrictions on the Chapel Hill Kehillah
Dear Mayor Foy and members of the Chapel Hill City Council;
I am indignant about the new restrictions you wish to place on the only synagogue in Chapel Hill.
You are asking the Kehillah, to build a bus station, for a bus that doesn't stop in front of the synagogue???
And requesting them to build a sidewalk in front of their building? Why not request every home down the street to put in a sidewalk, at their own expense??
The synagogue had openly requested to collect fees for the numerous illegal parking that has occurred in our lot. Which is cared for my our members? Is the head of the city council, vindictive? Should we have been dishonest and not admit to collecting occasionally, fees to help care for that lot???
The sophistication of my city's government has turned to pettiness. For shame.
Sincerely,
Sandra (Sunny Marlow)
