ATTACHMENT 2
Explanation of Associated Costs Requested by Fire Chief
1. Six full time firefighter positions – This cost represents salary and full time benefits for six permanent firefighter positions. These positions would be assigned to existing units at Fire Station #2 (Glen Lennox) and Fire Station #3 (Elliott Road) to increase staffing needed for firefighting and emergency response.
2. Two temporary contract firefighter positions – These would be additional positions of 19 weeks duration for the purpose of a buffer against failure or dropout of the six permanent positions during the fire training academy. These positions are salary only and do not receive benefits. Persons offered these positions would be placed on a first call list to fill any permanent position vacancies after completion of required training.
3. Candidate uniforms and protective clothing – This is a basic package of fire uniforms and firefighting safety gear needed for training. A complete complement of uniforms would not be ordered for these candidates until they have successfully completed training.
4. Training materials – This expense represents textbooks and classroom materials needed for the 18 week training academy. This will be the first academy conducted by the Chapel Hill Fire Department since 1993 and represents a new effort to increase minority recruitment and hiring. Thus we do not have a supply of the basic academy materials.
5. Academy instruction hours – This expense represents salary overtime hours for current Chapel Hill fire personnel who will be used to teach in the academy. Durham Technical Community College has committed to pay for 600 hours of instructional time which is over half of the needed hours but we must supplement that with additional time to cover the full curriculum schedule. This academy will be dedicated to Chapel Hill Fire Department candidates with a few seats offered to our mutual aid partner agencies.
