SUBJECT: Potential Street Closing for NCAA Baseball Regional Tournament
DATE: May 8, 2006
PURPOSE
The purpose of this memorandum is to respond to a request from the University of North Carolina that Ridge Road between Country Club Road and Stadium Drive be closed to vehicle traffic for a portion of each day Friday through Sunday, June 2-4, 2006.
The requested closures would occur if the University is selected to host the NCAA Regional Baseball Tournament.
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION
UNC Police Chief Derek Poarch has requested permission to close Ridge Road between Country Club Road and Stadium Drive for a portion of each day Friday through Sunday, June 2-4, 2006. If permission is granted, UNC Department of Public Safety employees would allow access for buses, emergency vehicles, Ridge Road residents and persons with UNC parking permits for the affected areas. The restriction would allow UNC to set up portable toilets, extra concessions, ticket will-call, and media staging areas across the road from Boshamer Stadium.
As with other University related closings, the UNC Department of Public Safety would set up the proper traffic patterns and screen Ridge Road at several critical points between Country Club and Stadium Drive to ensure maximum control and access is provided for emergency vehicles and other authorized vehicles. No tents or other objects would be allowed to obstruct the roadway or impede bus or emergency access. Bus routes would not be impacted.
MANAGER’S RECOMMENDATION
We recommend that the request from the University be approved.
