The Naming Committee met on May 22, 2006 in the Second Floor Conference Room from noon to 12:46 p.m. Those present included Council Member Sally Greene, Mayor Pro Tem Bill Strom, Council Member Jim Ward, and Town Clerk Sabrina Oliver.

Library Foundation Request:

Committee members discussed the request from the Library Foundation regarding naming rights to help fund collection improvements. The Committee took information provided by the Council at the April 10, 2006 meeting and refined a recommendation to present to the Council at its June 12, 2006 meeting.

The recommendation will provide the Council with six options ranging from no naming rights to a combination of rosters recognizing both individual and corporate donations.

Post Office Plaza Naming

It was the consensus of the Committee to recommend to the Council at its June 12 meeting that the Post Office Plaza be named either Peace and Justice Plaza or Peace Plaza. The Committee also requested that the Public Arts Commission and Historic District Commission confer to recommend a marker on which to display the names of those citizens to be honored. The committee recommended that the marker be low cost, low maintenance, and expandable.

Parks and Recreation Items

The Committee deferred discussion of the items.

Naming of Baseball Field at Umstead Park per Letter Received from Steven Stover

The Committee requested that the request be referred to the Manager and the Attorney.
