Subject: Request for Rent Relief from the town for WCOM LP Radio

Dear Mayor Foy and Chapel Hill Town Council,

My name is David Beck and I am writing on behalf of WCOM radio (103.5 Low Power) station manager Chris Frank  to ask that town relieve WCOM of its current $100 a month rent or reduce it to a nominal amount.  Chris asked me to send this note and I have cc:ed him on this message.

I hope you all have had an opportunity to listen to WCOM LP 103.5 (also on the internet at www.communityradio.coop).  The station provides an excellent variety of music, talk shows and alternative news and also great volunteer opportunities for Chapel Hill and Carrboro residents interested in radio.  It is a valuable community resource.

At present WCOM rents a lightpost at Southern Village from the town for the station's transmitter.  The station very much appreciates the access to this post.  For a very small non-profit like WCOM, even the $100 a month rent is a challenge.  Therefore WCOM is requesting relief from the town.

I realize this is a short message and relatively incomplete. Since the town is considering its 2007 budget I wanted to get this request in front of you as soon as possible.  Of course WCOM is glad to provide any additional information that you may need in order to make a decision on this request.

Sincerely,

David Beck
