New                    9.   Carbon Reduction Strategy

Description: Begin working with Professor Douglas Crawford Brown to define a strategy and program for reducing Carbon emissions in the Town of Chapel Hill.

February 13, 2006 Status: New Goal.

May 8, 2006 Status:  The Planning staff coordinated a collection of energy data for the Carbon Reduction Plan and Orange County Greenhouse Gas Audit with UNC class. Professor Crawford-Brown will give a presentation to the Town Council on May 22, 2006.

Products to Be Produced and Timetable

• Work with Orange County and Carrboro to prepare Greenhouse Gas Audit and Reduction Strategy, First Quarter, 2006.
• Coordinate with Professor Crawford-Brown to integrate Greenhouse Gas Audit into the development of Carbon Reduction Strategy
• Greenhouse Gas Audit and Reduction Strategy anticipate to be completed Third Quarter, 2006.

September 11, 2006 Status: In June 2006, the Council adopted a preliminary pledge to participate in the Carbon Reduction program. Staff has been reviewing the program and policy changes necessary to achieve the goals. Staff is also coordinating the Town’s pledge with a similar pledge by UNC and the ongoing ICLEI project to develop strategies to reduce greenhouse gases for Orange County.
