A RESOLUTION TO REQUEST THE DURHAM CHAPEL HILL CARRBORO METROPOLITAN PLANNING ORGANIZATION TO STUDY COMMUTER ACCESS FROM CHAPEL HILL TO RESEARCH TRI ANGLE PARK (2007-01-08/R-6)

 

WHEREAS, the Chapel Hill 2000 Comprehensive Plan includes the goal to: “Establish effective regional cooperation that promotes sustainable growth patterns, recognizing that economic development, land use, transportation , environmental, natural area linkages, and other planning issues transcend the boundaries of Chapel Hill”; and

 

WHEREAS, the Chapel Hill 2000 Comprehensive Plan includes the goal to: “Develop a balanced multi-modal transportation system that will enhance mobility for all citizens, reduce automobile dependence and preserve/enhance the character of Chapel Hill” and an objective to increase emphasis on transit, bicycle and pedestrian mobility town wide”; and

 

WHEREAS, the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization 1993 Regional Bicycle Plan for Durham and Orange Counties includes route plan maps which propose bicycle connector routes for commuting between the urban areas in Durham and Orange Counties, including Chapel Hill to Research Triangle Park; and

 

WHEREAS, the Council desires to provide improved facilities for bicycle commuters between Chapel Hill and Research Triangle Park;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Council hereby requests the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization to study and propose improved facilities for bicycle commuters between Chapel Hill and Research Triangle Park

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council requests Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization to form a task force to pursue this initiative formed from members of the Chapel Hill Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board, the Chapel Hill Transportation Board, the Carrboro Transportation Board, the Durham Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission and bicycle commuters.
