DATE: |
February 12, 2007 |
The attached resolution and budget ordinance would authorize the acceptance of a U.S. Department of Energy Million Solar Roofs grant awarded to the Town of Chapel Hill in the amount of $1,500.
The N.C. Solar Center has notified the Town of Chapel Hill of its intent to award the Town a $1,500 Million Solar Roofs “Solar Partner” grant to be used for solar projects proposed by the Chapel Hill Solar Roofs Committee (Attachment 1).
The grant period for the Solar Partner grant was between October 1, 2005 and December 31, 2006. However, due to federal delays in funding allocation, the Committee was not notified by the Solar Center of the Solar Partner grant opportunity until May 2006. The Committee submitted the application for the grant in May 2006. In June 2006, the Town received notice of the Solar Center’s intent to award the Town $1,500 in funding. This request will apply retroactively to the October 1, 2005 to December 31, 2006 grant period prescribed by the Solar Partner grant. Grant funding will be applied retroactively to the 2006-2007 Budget.
The grant-funded projects the Chapel Hill Million Solar Roofs Committee proposed to complete are listed in the Committee’s work statement and fee schedule (Attachment 2). The projects include hosting “meet-ups” and workshops on solar energy, updating an inventory of solar energy systems installed throughout Orange County, and conducting the 2006 Solar and Green Homes Tour.
The 2006-07 Budget will need to be adjusted to reflect the funding from this grant.
That the Council adopt the attached resolution and enact the budget ordinance authorizing the acceptance of the $1,500 grant award and inclusion of the funding in the 2006-07 Grants Fund Budget.
