A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR TO REQUEST, ON BEHALF OF THE COUNCIL, AN EXTENSION OF THE LEASE OF THE LINCOLN ART CENTER BUILDING (2007-02-26/R-3)

WHEREAS, the Town and the Chapel Hill/Carrboro Board of Education signed a joint use agreement in 1977 that included a provision for Town use of the Lincoln Arts Center building on Merritt Mill Road; and

WHEREAS, for approximately 30 years the Town has operated a pottery studio and numerous pottery programs that have benefited the community; and

WHEREAS, the agreement expires on December 31, 2007; and

WHEREAS, the Town has been unable to locate a suitable replacement facility;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Council authorizes the Mayor, on behalf of the Council, to request that the Chapel Hill/Carrboro Board of Education extend the lease of the Lincoln Art Center that expires on December 31, 2007 until June 30, 2009.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Manager is authorized to report back to the Council in April with cost and time estimates for various options for replacement of the Lincoln Arts Center.
