A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THAT THE NC GENERAL ASSEMBLY MAINTAIN THE STATE ENERGY OFFICE (2007-06-11/R-18)

WHEREAS, the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency has been identified as a top priority of the town of Chapel Hill; and

WHEREAS, the North Carolina State Energy Office has been an invaluable leader in helping both government and the private sector to reduce costs and be better stewards of the environment through the pursuit of energy efficiency, alternative fuels, and education of the general public; and

WHEREAS, since 1992 the State Energy Office has saved state government more than $200 million in energy costs; and

WHEREAS, the State Energy Office has been a vital asset to individual businesses and homeowners throughout North Carolina by producing guides and administering more than 50 programs that assist them in being more energy efficient; and

WHEREAS, the proposed budget of the North Carolina Senate has eliminated all funding of the State Energy Office; and

WHEREAS, this move comes at a time when energy issues are more important than ever with the rising specter of global warming, high gas prices, and increased air pollution; and

WHEREAS, a Conference Committee of the North Carolina House of Representatives and North Carolina Senate will propose a final budget;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that Council calls on the North Carolina General Assembly to craft a budget that maintains the State Energy Office at an increased level of funding so that it can continue its critical work to ensure a cleaner energy future for our state.
