WHEREAS, on April 23, 2007, the Council received a petition requesting Town participation in the purchase of property adjacent to the Botanical Garden Foundation’s Stillhouse Bottom Preserve; and
WHEREAS the Inventory of Natural Areas and Wildlife Habitats for Orange County, North Carolina (2004) has identified the area as an important natural area with over 100 species of plants; and
WHEREAS the purchase of the property would align with a Town goal of preserving significant open space areas;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Council indicates its commitment to contribute $5,000 toward the purchase of a 5.6 acre tract of property adjacent to the Stillhouse Bottom natural area, payable once the Botanical Garden Foundation is ready to close on the property.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Council that the Manager is authorized to negotiate and execute an agreement with the Botanical Garden Foundation, Inc. that would commit Town funds in exchange for a conservation easement to be granted to the Town, as a co-holder, at the time of closing.
