WHEREAS, in 2006, the Town and the University of North Carolina each pledged to participate in the CRed (Community Carbon Reduction) program and to reduce carbon emissions by 60% by 2050; and
WHEREAS, minimizing the use of fossil fuels to generate electricity is an important strategy toward achieving carbon emissions reductions; and
WHEREAS, the goal of NC GreenPower is to supplement the state’s existing power supply with more green energy in the form of electricity generated from renewable resources like the sun, wind and organic matter; and
WHEREAS, active participation by Chapel Hill citizens in the NC GreenPower program would benefit the environment by supporting the expansion of renewable energy and contribute to achieving the Town’s goals for carbon and greenhouse gas reduction.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Council supports the goals and objectives of NC GreenPower; and
NOW, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Town Manager is authorized to assist and support NC GreenPower with various information dissemination and outreach initiatives at his discretion and to continue conducting research on opportunities for the Town to possibly enter into a performance agreement with NC GreenPower for the provision of specific services related to the Town’s carbon reduction and energy conservation goals; and
NOW, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Council strongly encourages businesses and citizens of the Town of Chapel Hill to make tax deductible contributions to NC GreenPower.
