A RESOLUTION FOR THE PROVISION OF STRIPED BICYCLE LANES ON NC 86/MARTIN LUTHER KING. JR. BOULEVARD CORRIDOR (2007-06-27/R-8)

WHEREAS, in 2004 the Town commissioned a study of pedestrian barriers and other factors that may limit walking and bicycling in the NC 86/Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Corridor; and

WHEREAS, the 2004 study highlighted several possible treatments for improving pedestrian and bicycle safety and access throughout the corridor; and

WHEREAS, in 2006 the Town initiated an implementation plan to recommend measures to include those possible treatments in the NC 86/Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Corridor; and

WHEREAS, in May of 2007, the Town identified concerns about the ability to provide bike lanes through re-stripping of the existing roadway; and

WHEREAS, the Council asked the Transportation Board and the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board to review bike lane feasibility and provide recommendations;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Council direct the staff to

·         Work with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to provide striped bicycle lanes on the portion of NC 86/Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard between Homestead Road and Barclay Road.

·         Work with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to provide striping for wide outside lanes to accommodate bicyclists on the section of NC 86/Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard between Barclay Road and North Street.

·         Continue efforts to initiate a pilot program to evaluate the use of the shared arrow marking.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council directs Staff to immediately begin discussions with the North Carolina Department of Transportation regarding the implementation of the bicycle lanes on NC 86/Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.
