Subject:	Internship Program

With the adoption of the 2007-08 budget, the Council has continued the internship program initiated last year.  From my discussion with the interns and the departments for whom they worked, I believe the program was a success.

I discussed the first year of this program with Council Member Thorpe, who worked closely with the program.  Based on our experience and that discussion, I recommend two modifications to the program:

· An intern may begin work in July if available and identified in time to do so.  This earlier start would not change the compensation to the intern.

· With mutual agreement by the Town and the intern, the internship may last one full year rather than just one semester.

With your concurrence, we will implement these modifications. I will continue to work with Council Member Thorpe as the Council liaison to the Manager’s Office for this program.
