Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting September 19, 2007 |
Present: Terry Blalock, Chair; Faith Nager, Vice-Chair;; Neal Bench; Doug Heilig; Joan Guilkey, Pete Schwartz, and Eugene Farrar, Diane VandenBroek, Betsey Anderson, and Raymond Wong. Absent was Joey Jetevu. A quorum was present.
Response to Bulkley Soccer Petition: The commission voted 8-1 to not support the petition for
a new soccer league in Chapel Hill operated by the Department. Staff had recommended against
the petition citing the abundance of soccer leagues, the ability of children to participate in the
various leagues regardless of their ability to pay and the lack of fields available to support a
new league without causing the existing leagues harm.
Development Application: Purefoy Drive Development – The commission, after a review of the project by the developer, unanimously approved resolution A., with some reservations about the location of the recreation space that were accepted by the developer and agreement made to continue a dialogue to mitigate these issues.
Note: Commissioner Farrar expressed a concern about the impact of the expense on senior citizens of hooking up to the new sewer line and also the potential for increased property taxes in the area.
Next Meeting – The next meeting will be held on October 17th. The Commission requested that the Town manager and the Mayor attend this meeting.
