Subject: pedestrian safety near Estes Hills school

Message sent by [email protected]

Dear Mayor, Council members, and City Manager:

I'm writing to request your help in ensuring the safety of pedestrians crossing North Estes Drive to reach the Estes Hills school.

Thank you for your support to date of pedestrian safety in Chapel Hill and for encouraging residents to walk. We ask that you support the many Estes Hills families who walk to and from school, by considering:

1) installing a crosswalk at the intersection of Estes and Halifax

2) re-enforcing pedestrian crossing rights at North Estes Drive crosswalks  (with flashing yellow lights, and/or signage or ticketing)

Unfortunately drivers do not stop for families who are trying to cross Estes to get to school - I have seen numerous instances of parents and children narrowly hit by cars as they try to cross Estes Drive to reach the sidewalk.

Enforcement of pedestrian rights at the crosswalks is just as important as the existence of the crosswalks themselves. I have noticed that drivers do not stop for pedestrians at the Estes and Burlage crosswalk, for example - not even for a blind pedestrian and his guide dog, as I noticed recently!

Thank you in advance for your consideration of these requests. Any help the town government can provide to calm traffic on Estes Drive, would be much appreciated.

sincerely yours,

Thomas Clay and Glaire Anderson
