subject:       Appointments to the Sustainability Committee

date:             November 7, 2007

Tonight, the Council may make appointments to nine vacancies on the Sustainability Committee, which was created on May 7, 2007 by resolution 2007-05-07/R-15. The Council may also appoint a Council member to serve on this committee.

The Sustainability Committee encompasses the tasks of the Million Solar Roofs Initiative Steering Committee that was dissolved by Item 4i on tonight’s agenda.

The charge of the Sustainability Committee follows:

1.   Review and make recommendations on sustainability principles, plans, and policies established by the Council; for example, plans that would be developed to help fulfill the CRed goal to reduce community-wide carbon emissions.

2.   Coordinate with Town Boards and Commissions to advance sustainability principles, plans, and policies established by the Council, such as the Comprehensive Plan theme to conserve and protect natural environments.

3.   Seek information from other organizations to aid in the development of strategies, programs and initiatives that will further the sustainability goals established by the Council, such as the collaboration of the Million Solar Roofs Committee with the North Carolina Solar Center to hold the Solar and Green Homes Tour.

4.   Provide a representative to the Town’s Community Design Commission to review, as appropriate, proposed development projects, in keeping with the sustainability goals established by the Council, such as energy efficiency expectations for private developments.

The Council has asked for clarification on the applicant’s interests and expertise with regard to the categories of environmental protection, economic vitality, and social justice. The responses received from the applicants are included with their application forms. Those that do not include surveys did not reply.

A resolution appointing a Council member to the committee and copies of the applications and ballots are attached.

RECOMMENDATION

That the Council make appointments to the Sustainability Committee and adopt the attached resolution appointing a Council member to serve on the committee.
