A RESOLUTION OF SUPPORT AND ADMINISTRATON FOR THE APPLICATION OF NORTH CAROLINA SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL GRANTS AND ACTION PLAN (2007-11-19/R-12)

Whereas, the North Carolina Safe Routes to School program has issued a call for grant applications.  In September 2007 the Town received a letter of notification that Phillips Middle School will be invited to apply for a Demonstration Grant for up to $250,000; and

Whereas, upon submitting Safe Routes to School Grant applications, a resolution is required showing support and administration from the Town of Chapel Hill.  The Town is also required to submit a Safe Routes to School Action Plan; and

Whereas, the Town will partner with the Chapel Hill – Carrboro City Schools to develop both Phillips Middle School and Estes Hills Elementary School Safe Routes to School Demonstration grant application for the December 14, 2007 deadline for submission, and

Whereas, the Town of Chapel Hill will be the lead agency partnering with the Chapel Hill – Carrboro City Schools; and

Whereas, the lead agency will staff, support and administer the Safe Routes to School Demonstration Grant process.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Town Manager is authorized to complete and submit the Demonstration Safe Routes to School Grant application to the North Carolina Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council directs staff to continue to seek other grant funding from North Carolina Safe Routes to School.
