This memorandum provides a status report on the work associated with the development of the Chapel Hill Long Range Transit Plan. .

BACKGROUND

On January 8, 2007 the Council authorized the Town Manager to contract with TranSystems, Inc. to prepare the Chapel Hill Long Range Transit Plan in coordination with the Town of Carrboro and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Plan is anticipated to recommend a transit network intended to provide high quality transit services along major transportation corridors and throughout the Chapel Hill, Carrboro and University communities. DISCUSSION

The Chapel Hill Transit Long Range Transit Plan Policy Committee, composed of representatives from Chapel Hill, Carrboro and the University, have reviewed the preliminary analysis from TranSystems and identified two transit scenarios for detailed analysis (Attachments 2 and 3). It is expected that the results of this analysis will be presented to the Policy Committee in December, 2007.

The Committee has also received a presentation on land use issues related to the development of high intensity transit corridors along major transportation corridors. (Attachment 4)

NEXT STEPS

The schedule for completion of the Long Range Transit Plan has been delayed to allow for the development of a more comprehensive transit network and the Policy Committee to refine the alternatives to be analyzed. It is anticipated that the Plan will be completed in February, 2008.
