Re: Petition to Change On-Street Parking Regulations on Oakwood and Rogerson Drive

Dear Mayor Foy:

Over the past few months, parking by campus commuters has dramatically increased on Oakwood Drive and Rogerson Drive, particularly in the areas around Oakwood Park, the tennis courts, and the blocks located closest to Highway 54.

Many of those parking on the street are clearly commuting to campus, some by bicycle and others by bus. These cars come in the morning, and leave in the later afternoon. However, some cars are arriving on Sunday and remaining until Friday evening. I expect that this is in response to recent increases in ticketing and towing from the Glen Lenox apartments.

With continued development of the area surrounding Glen Lenox, along with shrinkage of parking available on campus, I am concerned that this will be an ongoing and growing problem. I have discussed this idea with many neighbors on Oakwood Drive, and they share my concern.

Neighbors are also concerned that campus commuters are now taking up much of the parking available for those using Oakwood Park during the day. Without available on street parking, those who would like to use the park or tennis courts must park up the street in front of someone’s home and walk to the park.

UNC provides free campus commuter parking at the UNC Friday Center for Continuing Education, located only about 1 mile away from our neighborhood. Very frequent bus service is available from this lot. This provides a convenient and free alternative for those now using our street for commuter parking.

I would like to formally request that the town consider the implementation of parking regulations around Oakwood Park, as well as on-street parking permits on all of Oakwood Drive and Rogerson Drive during weekdays.

Thank you for your consideration,

Jennifer Horney
