A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE TOWN MANAGER TO HIRE A CONSULTANT TO PERFORM A STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND FEASIBILITY STUDY OF THE PLAZA LEVEL OF THE WALLACE PARKING FACILITY TO DETERMINE ITS SUITABILITY FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF NEW OFFICE/COMMERCIAL SPACE ON TOP OF THE EXISTING FACILITY. (2008-05-05/R-8.1)

WHEREAS, the Town periodically receives inquiries regarding alternative uses of the plaza area on top of the Wallace Parking Facility; and

WHEREAS, the Town Council believes that this important downtown public area is currently under-utilized and could support alternative uses including the addition of office/commercial space that might be constructed on top of the existing parking facility; and

WHEREAS, the upper level of the existing parking facility would need to be studied to determine the extent and type of new construction, if any, that could occur on top of the parking facility without requiring extensive structural and/or other modifications to the existing structure.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Council authorizes the Town Manager to hire a consultant to perform a structural analysis and feasibility study of the plaza level of the Wallace Parking Facility to determine its suitability for the construction of new office/commercial space on top of the existing structure.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council authorizes the Manager to use up to $15,000 from the Council’s contingency fund to pay for this analysis and feasibility study.

This is the 5th day of May, 2008.
