Subject: Innovation Center Comments for 1/23/08 Council Meeting

Mr. Mayor and Council Members,

I have a last minute conflict with your meeting tonight, but after sitting through last Sunday’s meeting I feel up to speed on the proposal for the Innovation Center.

I was very encouraged with the tone on both sides of the discussion last week.   The University answered concerns forthrightly and with commitment.  You kept your duties front and center but worked toward finding common ground.

I hope that spirit continues and cooperation grows.  I have attached a column I wrote that was published this morning in the Chapel Hill News, which can also be found at this link: http://www.chapelhillnews.com/front/story/12281.html.  In it, I express my sentiment that this University Administration has put in place internal expectations and controls to ensure future development will meet or exceed the highest town standards and and our mutual need for sustainable investment.

I do think we need the Innovation Center for the sake of the health of the University and our State economy.  As important, I think Chapel Hill needs that kind of investment here.  Therefore, I recommend we enthusiastically work to make this project happen as expeditiously as we can.

Sincerely,

Mark Zimmerman
