MEMORANDUM

A QUICK REPORT TO:                  Roger L. Stancil, Town Manager

FROM:            Carlo Robustelli, Mayoral Aide

SUBJECT:      Mayor’s Strategic Planning Committee

DATE:            August 6, 2008

Members Present: Mayor Kevin Foy, Council Member Sally Greene, Council Member Bill Strom

Staff Present: Roger Stancil (Town Manager), Carlo Robustelli (Mayoral Aide),

Guests: Margaret Henderson (School of Government), Lydian Altman-Sauer (School of Government), Daniel Goldberg (Chapel Hill Herald), Del Snow (resident)

The committee discussed the goals/purpose of the strategic plan and the role of a facilitator during the strategic planning process. Mayor Foy said that the goal of the strategic plan is to narrow the goals outlined in the Comprehensive Plan by coming up with a 5-7 year time horizon as to what the town might look like.  The committee agreed that the strategic plan process must include citizens and community stakeholders.

The committee was in support of proceeding with the strategic planning process.  The committee also agreed that a way to involve residents, staff, and experts involved would be to organize day long charrettes (similar to the Roger’s Road Task Force model).  Specifically, the committee suggested contacting the Durham Area Designers to help organize these sessions.  The charrettes would focus on specific parts of town and would include: Martin Luther King BLVD, NC-54, 15-501 North & South, Downtown, Rosemary/Columbia intersection.

The committee suggested the following steps moving forward:

  1. Recommend moving forward with strategic plan
  2. Direct staff to discuss possible facilitators role with Durham Area Designers and report back to Council
