AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 7, ARTICLE II, DIVISION 6 OF THE TOWN CODE TO ALLOW THE COUNCIL TO GRANT VARIANCES TO THE REQUIREMENT FOR SPRINKLERS IN RENOVATED

BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill as follows:

Section 1. Division 6, Article II, Chapter 7 of the Town Code is hereby amended by adding a new Section 7-59 to read as follows:

“Section 7-59.  Variances Authorized.

            The Town Council may grant variances to the otherwise applicable sprinkler requirements in Section 7-56, paragraph (3) of this Division for renovations to existing non-residential structures upon a showing to the satisfaction of the Town Council that the plans submitted for the renovation work include adequate precautionary and safety measures to meet otherwise applicable code provisions and that the changes do not compromise existing life safety elements.”

Section 2.  This Ordinance shall be effective upon enactment.
