A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE TOWN MANAGER TO IMPLEMENT CERTAIN CHANGES TO STREET LIGHTING AND OVERHEAD UTILITIY LINES IN THE GIMGHOUL NEIGHBORHOOD (2008-11-24/R-2)

WHEREAS, the Gimghoul Neighborhood petitioned the Town Council requesting approval of certain changes to street lights and overhead lines in the neighborhood; and

WHEREAS, the Town Council would like to preserve the character and appearance of Historic Districts; and

WHEREAS, the Town staff, area property owners, and Duke Energy worked together and developed preliminary plans for changes to the street lights on portion of Ridge Lane and Glandon Drive; and

WHEREAS, the property owners agreed to pay for the total cost of the proposed changes to the streets lights and underground lines;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Council authorizes the Town Manager to execute an agreement with adjoining property owners to implement the following changes to the streets lights in Gimghoul Neighborhood contingent on receipt of adequate assurances that the total cost of the work shall be borne by property owners:

a)      Phase I:  Change all overhead utility lines to underground on Ridge Lane from Evergreen Lane to its end.  Replace the existing wooden street light pole located at the end of Ridge Lane with a 12 foot black fiberglass decorative pole.

b)      Phase II:  Replace one wooden street light pole located on Glandon Drive with three 12 foot black fiberglass decorative poles served by underground power lines.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council directs the Town Manager to submit the proposed changes to street lighting to the Historic District Commission for their review and approval prior to the implementation.
