AGENDA #3a(1)
Petition to Chapel Hill Town Council
Chandler’s Green Request to Replace Existing Sweeten Creek Rd. Speed Humps
December 2, 2008
Dear Town Council Members,
On 3/13/08 the Chandler’s Green Homeowners Association (CGHOA) Board of Directors met with Kumar Neppalli, Engineering Services Manager and Ernie Roger of the traffic department to review a recent traffic study completed for our neighborhood. Kumar and Ernie presented information identifying average daily vehicle volume, speed and a review of our existing traffic calming devices. We appreciate their effort and time.
We currently have three speed humps in our neighborhood with posted speeds of 15 mph, all located on Sweeten Creek Rd. We feel they have been very effective in slowing down traffic in our neighborhood. However several neighbors have complained that the speed humps are too high, causing vehicles to scrape bottom, even at speeds as slow as 10 mph. The result is excessive noise to neighbors living near the speed humps as well as potential damage to vehicles. Kumar stated that our speed humps “do not meet the current Town standard” as they are narrow and set too high. He suggested that we petition the Town Council if we wanted new “at standard” speed humps installed. That is the purpose of this letter.
Safety is of primary importance in our neighborhood and we are convinced that our speed humps have slowed down vehicles. However installing new speed humps to the current standard would significantly reduce noise and potential vehicle damage. We therefore would like to petition the Town to make it a priority to install new “at standard” speed humps on Sweeten Creek Rd.
Thank you for your consideration of our request.
Best regards,
Michele Kleckner Bill Starnes
