Town of Chapel Hill Executive Summary |
Meeting Date: 12-08-2008 AGENDA #5a |
Title of Agenda Item: Elementary School # 11 – Gymnasium Petition Response
Background: The attached staff memorandum responds to a petition from the Chapel Hill – Carrboro School system to determine the Town’s willingness to assist with the construction of a full sized Gymnasium.
Fiscal Note: Staff estimates construction costs for the proposed gymnasium to be approximately $800,000 to $1,000,000. The Town of Chapel Hill does not have funding available for this project. To provide funding, the Council would need to reorder its capital priorities for the coming years in the adopted CIP. This year’s total CIP funding is $1,000,000 and those priorities are currently under consideration for deferral as part of the budget savings program.
Staff Recommendation(s): That the Council receive the attached report which recommends that the Town of Chapel Hill decline this opportunity to participate with the school system to build a full-sized gymnasium while encouraging continued cooperation between the school system and the Parks and Recreation Department.
