Meeting
Notes: 9.30.08
Aesthetics
- Greater
integration of paving + organic qualities of the sculpture
- Brought
back organic shapes of original proposal with 6 overlapping layers
- Created
longer 2 stronger linear forms instead of multiple smaller ones that
define important spatial areas of the plaza
Safety
and Constructability
- Paving
‘chevron’ shapes removed- now curved
- simplified
paving pattern and contraction joint pattern
- skateboard/
climbing issues: Resolved with folded surface and perforations in the
metal
- Tripping
hazard along Franklin Street: moved sculpture to center of plaza to draw
people into the plaza area.
- Less
individualized sculptures allows for easier maintenance and installation.
Programming/
Spatial Issues
- Spatial
use and movement diagram shows the way in which the sculpture and paving
pattern frames and reinforces the areas of use along Church Street, the
upper café plaza and the movement patterns through the sculpture
- Blockage
of movement from two buildings: Removed sculpture and created stronger
linear forms for the sculptures away from the desire line between the two
buildings
Overall
Comments:
- We
opened up pedestrian circulation greatly across the plaza, from the
residential neighborhoods north of Rosemary to the campus – the NW to SE
flow.
- We
removed the sculpture piece that was along the Franklin Street sidewalk,
getting rid of a potential maintenance and circulation issue.
- Circulation
has been opened up and sculptures have been placed to encourage larger gatherings
as illustrated in the diagram.
Paving
- Minimum
witdth on paving pieces is now 8” – previously bands came down to a point,
and they are more rectangular, less pointed now. Previous widths on
paving stripes varied greatly, from 6 inches to 1’6 inches.
- The
materially of the paving is being established to be a strong enough
contrast with the body of the plaza paving so they feel a part of the
sculpture, not an afterthought.
Fire
Department
- We
have 12’to the north and 17’clearance to the south of the planters for
access into the courtyard.
- Emergency
switches for the lights and pumps will be provided at plaza level
- Fog
will not be functional during freezing temperatures to avoid damage to
nozzle and tubing system.
- Paving
will have additives to ensure that areas are non-slip once final material
pattern is confirmed.
- Looking
into treatment for water circulation that would deter the formation of
algae as part of filtration system. Water is potable, and therefore does
not harbor algae growth.
- Mist
not on constantly, so sculpture will be times so that surfaces have a
chance to dry out between mistings. The surfaces can also be power washed
as needed to remove any grime.
Public
Works Department
- Drains
are no loner located underneath sculptures. All drains will be visible
and fully cleanable by typical methods.
- Sculpture
will be constructed out of Stainless Steel, which can be relatively easily
repaired in the case of vandalism, either through power washing, or
sanding and re-finishing the surface of the art. Steel is perhaps the
most forgiving of sculptural mediums.
- We
currently show misting happening in the planters, only for the comfort of
pedestrians.
- The
folding surface of the sculpture removes any confusion that the sculpture
could be used for seating, as well as serves as a natural deterrent for
skateboarders and bike riders from grinding against the sculpture.
