subject: Reclassification of Transit Project Coordinator Position to GIS Technician, Senior
date: January 26, 2009
The purpose of this memorandum is to recommend one position classification change in the Transit Department.
Chapel Hill Transit has a growing need to manage databases for Geographic Information Systems (GIS), automated passenger counters and system performance data. These tasks have been done by interns and during the past year by a full time temporary person. The need to move from a temporary to a regular full time dedicated position reflects the growing need for database management and ensures continuity in the position.
In order to accommodate GIS activities, we recommend that a vacant Project Coordinator position (Grade 37) be reclassified downward to a GIS Technician, Senior – Transit (Grade 33).
The proposed GIS Technician, Senior – Transit position is funded through Federal Transit Administration grants. These funds have been available since July 1, 2008.
Reclassify the Project Coordinator position (Grade 37) to GIS Technician, Senior – Transit (Grade 33). This will provide continuity in database management and analysis. We recommend that the Council enact the attached ordinance.
