Title of Agenda Item: Safe Routes to School Application
Background: The attached staff memorandum includes background information on the North Carolina Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Grant application process. The SRTS grant will provide funding for infrastructure improvements surrounding Estes Hills Elementary School and Phillips Middle Schools.
Fiscal Note: The grant application is for $165,500 and will be spent on capital improvements, educational materials and program. The Town will be reimbursed after completion of the project. The Town must agree to accept all maintenance for any facilities constructed which will be specified in the reimbursement agreement between the Town and NCDOT. Administration of the program will utilize existing staff. Transportation planning staff currently coordinate with Engineering and Public Works staff to construct sidewalks using federal funds and local bond funds. The Town would also assume the cost of maintenance for the new facilities.
Staff Recommendation(s): That the Council adopt the attached resolution to support the application for the North Carolina Safe Routes to School grant. If a grant is awarded, we will return to the Council requesting authorization to accept the grant.
