subject:

Letter to North Carolina Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association (NCDTSEA)

date:

February 23, 2009

The Chapel Hill Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board is petitioning the Town Council to send a letter from the Mayor or from the Chair of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board that advocates bicycle and pedestrian safety in the state driver education program.

The North Carolina Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association (NCDTSEA) is part of the national organization the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association (ADTSEA).   These groups and others focus on improving safety on roadways through the driver education program curriculum.   Attachment 1 is information on the NCDTSEA.   Attachment 2 is a draft letter written by the Bicycle and Pedestrian Board to the NCDTSEA.   The letter asks NCDTSEA to augment efforts on educating motorists about bicycle and pedestrian safety issues.   The Board has noted several issues in the letter that cyclists and pedestrians encounter with motorists on roadways.   The Board has also suggested ways in which NCDTSEA could increase awareness on bicycle and pedestrian safety in the driver education program curriculum.

The Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board is asking the Town Council to support sending the letter to NCDTSEA.   The Board would like to circulate the letter and garner support from other local governments and organizations in the area.   Any response by the NCDTSEA could be presented to the Town Council once the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board has had an opportunity to review and discuss.
